So Far So Good!

"Our dog has MANY allergies and there is only one food that she can eat (and likes) through Dr. Harveys. We were looking for another balanced alternative that we could try and pair with a protein of our choice. Our picky eater has been eating this for about a week now with no issues. Very happy so far!"

BUY FAR THE BEST

"THIS IS BUY FAR THE BEST MIX, NO GRAIN WHICH IS A PLUS, & SHE LIKES THE FRUIT & VEGGIE. I TRIED THE ONE WITH GRAIN & MY DOG DIDN'T LIKE IT"

Gary C. (5/5)

Easy prep/ easy feeding

"My labs love this base mix and I do too. It’s easy to prepare a healthy meal knowing they are eating fruit and veggies. I simply add on top some cooked chopped chicken or some cooked ground turkey for protein. No picky eaters here!"

Yvonne P. (5/5)

Our dogs love this

"We have three large dogs, a Labradoodle, a Rhodesian, Ridgeback, and a pitbull, and all three of them love honest, kitchen, dog food they lick the balls and then lick each other’s bowls afterwards! We have tried all varieties, including the protein with chicken and turkey. When we buy the base mix we buy ground turkey in bulk from Costco and bake it in the oven for one weeks supply, freeze half of it and then break up the rest. because of the price of protein these days it is not cheaper to buy the base mix, but we do it for a variety."

Great Option for Dog wth Food Allergies

"One of my dogs has multiple food allergies, like chicken and beef. I use the fruit & veggie base mix with cooked ground turkey and both my dogs love it. I feel good about all the ingredients - all human grade. It's the best pet food I've ever given to any of my dogs."

Great food for picky eater

"We have been giving this food to our senior boxer for about a year. The clusters are a good quality food that our picky eater loves. We also give the base mix, the fruit and whole grain as a "topper. " Rocko, our boy, has dental surgery and we needed a food that would soften in warm water. He did not care for the other food we fed him. The rescue recommended The Honest Kitchen, as most of the fosters feed this to their animals. He transitioned nicely on the food. His coat is shiny and gorgeous. The dry patches on his neck, from a tight collar have cleared up and the hair is growing back slowly. His poops look great. This may be too much information, but even when I have not had an opportunity to get out and clean the yard-due to weather-his poop is easy to pick up and not mushy. My husband and I are very lucky this food was recommended to us. Rocko becomes a silly dog when it is time for supper. He does his little stomps on the floor and runs in circles. He gets very excited. The base mix is pricey, we buy the 7lb mix and it lasts for almost 3 weeks. The kibble lasts about 5 weeks. It is well worth the price to feed your pet a good quality food."

Deena D. (5/5)

Nutrious and Easy

"An easy and nutritional way to make sure my pets have healthy fruits and veggies in their diet. All I do is add water and protein."

Theresa S. (5/5)

HAPPY DOGS, GREAT PRODUCT

"This fruit and veggies mix is a game changer! My Great Pyrenees won't eat fruit at all and my German Shepherd won't eat berries but both of them will eat this. I have a Pitt puppy who will eat anything I give her. I add deboned boiled chicken or boiled ground turkey, beef liver or salmon after rinsing and they all three gobble down every bite. Its great knowing they are getting healthy fruit and veggies to help their digestion and whole body. I really like the convenience and price point. Dogs, they love it! Wonderful and easy food to fill in the blanks without all the corn and junk. Will surely reorder soon."

Our golden doodle will be

"Our golden doodle will be thirteen this year, she very much enjoys her honest kitchen base with chicken added. Her morning starts with a little kibble and stew poured over the top. Happy girl."

DANA D. (5/5)

My dogs eat it, but

"My dogs eat it, but it upsets my little guys stomach. I only bought this mix due to my regular mix being out of stock. Would not buy it again unless I have to."

Q&A

Can this be made with warm bone broth instead of warm water?
Hi Cindy, Absolutely! we always suggest to add variety with our pet's meal and you can definitely use our broths as an alternative to water when hydrating.
At what age can I start feeding this to my puppy? She is now 7 months old. Thank you.
Hi Jeannine, Thank you for reaching out to The Honest Kitchen. Most vets advise that a puppy should be on a puppy diet until 12-18 months of age. Please let me know if you have any other concerns. All the best,
I have a 6 lb chi mix, a senior rescue. She has had chronic pancreatitis this year, inflammatory bowel disease and now her kidneys are in trouble. She eats only HK food, currently only beef or beef and lamb grain free stew. The vet wants us to cut down the protein by adding extra fruits and veggies to the stew, I was wondering if the base could be used to dilute the protein in the stew if I don't have any fresh available for her? 2nd question- I have another rescue about 9 lb chi mix who is on prescription food - urinary one for calcium oxalate crystals - do you have any recommendations of your food that could work? My other dogs (so 3 of the 4) all eat HK, I have been using HK for many many years, I just would rather not have to use the canned prescription food, however, it did get rid of the crystals, so I can't ignore that. I was just wondering if the base could be used for a prescription diet base. Thanks
Thank you for reaching out and for your many years of loyalty. We understand your desire to find whole food solutions for your senior rescues' complex health needs. **For your senior with kidney issues:** Yes, you can use our **Base Mix** to add fruits and veggies to her stew. However, this must be done **under your veterinarian's direct guidance**. They need to calculate the exact amount to safely lower the overall protein and phosphorus levels to meet her specific kidney-support requirements. Please consult them before proceeding. The safest approach for both dogs is to **share our product information with your veterinarian**. They can review the detailed nutritional analysis of our Base Mix or any recipe and advise if and how it could fit into a vet-supervised therapeutic plan. For your dog, Although our foods are not formulated to be prescription diets, we do have recipes that fit the recommended feeding model for kidney issues. Our Whole Grain Turkey, Whole Grain Beef, Limited Ingredient Turkey, and Grain Free Chicken recipes are what we recommend. Most vets advise that the goal is to have moderate protein with lower phosphorus and sodium. Here is some information on each of those recipes: Whole Grain Turkey Protein - 22% Phosphorus - 1.1% Sodium - 0.13% You can find more information about this recipe here: https://www.thehonestkitchen.com/dehydrated-whole-grain-turkey-dog-food. Whole Grain Beef: Protein - 22.5% Phosphorus - 1.08% Sodium - 0.19% You can find more information about this recipe here: https://www.thehonestkitchen.com/products/dehydrated-whole-grain-beef-dog-food Limited Ingredient Turkey: Protein - 24.5% Phosphorus - 1.18% Sodium - 0.13% You can find more information about this recipe here: https://www.thehonestkitchen.com/dehydrated-limited-ingredient-turkey-dog-food. Grain Free Chicken: Protein - 24% Phosphorus - 1.01% Sodium - 0.19% You can find more information about this recipe here: https://www.thehonestkitchen.com/products/dehydrated-grain-free-chicken-dog-food You may also consider trying our Base Mixes, but we recommend this under the advisement of a vet who can help to ensure that the proper nutrient levels are met. I hope this helps! Please feel free to reach out if you have any other questions. Thanks so much,
Hi - I would like to prepare a large volume of hydrated base mix to last for 2-3 days for our 5 dogs. I would add the protein at the time of each meal. I notice a volume decrease of the base + water due to water absorption, for example I tested the recommended 51-70 lb dog serving size of 1 cup dry mix and 1 1/2 cups water and it made a total volume of 2 cups, not 2 1/2 cups. How do I know how much to feed each dog if the hydrated mix volume? Do you have a chart for that?
Hi Liz, Please see our base mix chart below ![](https://thehonestkitchen.zendesk.com/attachments/token/APboMOFxNDyA9rc0iV86UaJrp/?name=inlineImage.png)
If I purchase a bag, will instructions be included on how much protein to add based on dog size? And the types of protein that are adequate? I don’t see it listed in the info…
Hi SH, Yes, and you can also find it on our website ![](https://thehonestkitchen.zendesk.com/attachments/token/G4Fbd4XdB4TOMGvBMIwoElfnw/?name=image.png) Hope this helps!

You can use a variety of protein options to complete these recipes. Popular options include ground turkey and cooked chicken.

Many customers find the Greater Goods Nourish Digital Kitchen Scale and Nutrition Data useful for nutritional data around different protein options.

Each pound of Base Mix equates to about 4 dry cups of food.

Find your dog's daily feeding amount using the feeding guidelines. Divide that amount by the total dry cups in your chosen box (see below).

3 lb box = 12 dry cups
7 lb bag= 28 dry cups

Example: A 30 lb dog with an average activity level is recommended 1/2 dry cups per day. If you purchase a 7 lb box (28 dry cups), it will last 56 days.
